Esmail Koushan was an Iranian film
producer, director, and screenwriter.
He revived the Iranian film industry
in the late 1940s after a decade-long
period in doldrums, earning him the
sobriquet, the “Father of Iranian
Cinema”

The first Farsi dubbed foreign film
premiered in Crystal Movie Theater,
in Tehran, Iran.

1946

Appeared as an extra in The Song of Desert, while
he attended graduate school in Berlin. This was his
first exposure to filmmaking.

1939

Fleeing the Berlin bombing, Esmail
moved to Vienna, where he continued
his studies while working as a production
assistant at the Wien Film, Vienna, Austria.

1942

Escaped the Nazi Austria and made his
way to Turkey, where he married and
completed his degree. While in Istanbul,
he launched a postproduction company
to dub foreign films into Persian for the
first time.

1944

Born on February 22, in Tehran, Iran.

1917
